ASCiiD?ASCiiD, a mixing of the words ACiD and Ascii, is the ascii art section of ACiD Productions, Inc., producers of high quality computer generated art."What is ascii art?" Ascii art is the creation of aesthetically pleasing artwork with only the characters that you see on your keyboard in front of you. Started long before other forms of computer art in the Commodore 64 and Amiga computer systems, ascii still goes on strong.. ftp sites, file descriptions, even MUDs and MOOs still use ascii artwork instead of the more common JPEG/GIF artwork. Ascii art is generally divided into two main styles, "oldskool" and "newskool." Oldskool uses the more basic format for images using mainly the characters /, \, |,- and _. Most often, the art created with the oldskool style is fonts (words or phrases). Newskool on the other hand, uses all characters available to them, as long as you can type them out on your keyboard. This includes $, %, &, #, @, and even extended ascii characters typed out using the ALT-Keypad numbers. Oldskool artists create both fonts AND pictures, some of them going up in size to a couple hundred lines or more. On this page are examples of newskool art, and you can view oldskool art in the ASCiiD Compilation packs, which are viewable online here.

View The ASCiiD CompilationsAnd because X-Windows/Macs/MS-Windows 3.1/95 all change some ascii characters to some messed-up font equivalent, you can click on the links below to save them in their original format on your harddisk. I recommend some sort of image browser to view them, such as ACiDView. Unless of course you're using lynx, a real man's browser.
