Last issue we covered the three parts that will make up the ACiD-100 Project / Reunion. Soon we will be publishing our upcoming magazine "The Product: Issue 3", followed by the release of the highly anticipated artpack ACiD-100 aka "ACiD Acquisition Update #100" and finally later next year our reunion will be held at the legendary demoparty known as "Assembly 2004" in Helsinki, Finland. The one and only place where demos such as Future Crew's Second Reality made their debut over a decade ago. Inclusion to this distribution list is limited and exclusive. By receiving this message means you are or once were a part of the ACiD family and are invited to be a part of something special. This project is not just an opportunity to work with other legends from different eras, but also a chance to catch up and rekindle old times, share your personal experiences in the group and the scene via the magazine, and (IMHO) most importantly preserve the legacy of history you have left behind as part of an unparalled and unexampled organization of elite underground computer artists. If you'd like a copy of a back-issue of this or future letters, or if you're new to the list, all articles will be posted at: http://www.acid.org/radman/acid-100/acid-100_news-1.txt http://www.acid.org/radman/acid-100/acid-100_news-2.txt And so on. ...CURRENT EVENTS As of this writing, we are working towards the release of the last "normal" artpack, ACiD-99, slated to be released this month. In May we presented the scene with two attention grabbing releases, Remorse ASCII pack #49 and pHluid Music Disk #45. The ASCII pack was a culmination of oldschool, newschool and the current trend of the scene, block ASCII -- also referred to as uncolored ANSI. The music disk is somewhat of a solo album by patientzero featuring loads of bigbeat/urban techno and trance, almost entirely in MP3 format. A second solo album is also pending this month from the godfather of pHluid, Pinion himself. All files are accessible from www.acid.org on the Current section. ...THE PRODUCT 3 When should articles for The Product 3 be turned in? (Now.) We are accepting articles for the magazine at this time and will continue to do so up until it's publication which is scheduled for Q3 of 2003. Any sort of article which pertains to "the scene" will be considered for inclusion but the most sought after are those of an autobio- graphical nature. There is no length limit, the longer the better. I can't express enough or really even say even I can fully appreciate just how important each article received really is myself. An enormous thank you goes out to everyone who has contributed so far. In addition to bio's, other suggested ideas to work from include editorials, party reports, rants, tutorials, top-10's, humorous articles, rumor mills, you name it. Graphics can be included as a part of your article in case you need to make visual demonstrations. We made mention last issue of oldschool ACiD influence in the major motion picture The Matrix 2. Another fact: One of our most senior members played an instrumental role in the creation of the XBOX console game Halo. Again, more details will be revealed when the magazine comes out. :) The Product magazine back issues are available at: ftp://ftp.artpacks.acid.org/pub/artpacks/mags/1992/product.zip ftp://ftp.artpacks.acid.org/pub/artpacks/mags/1996/product2.zip ...ACiD-100 So, more specifically, what are we looking to showcase in our 100th update? Anything and everything multimedia. Graphics, animation, music, etc. For the exact details of which file formats will and won't be accepted please refer to "Phase 2" of the ACiD-100 FAQ at: http://www.acid.org/radman/acid-100/acid-100.faq.txt ...GOLDEN OLDIES Commonly asked questions lately have been: "Is my art still available somewhere?" Everything ever released with ACiD is available online at two archives, take your pick: http://artscene.textfiles.com/acid/ARTPACKS/ ftp://ftp.artpacks.acid.org/pub/artpacks/artpacks/ If you are limited to dial-up internet I also have these saved to CD-ROM. At present the archives of all ACiD work amount to 3 full 700MB discs. "How can I view it?" There are several options to viewing ANSIs these days. If you can't execute or emulate DOS or Windows code, then there are two online viewers available... Mimic has hosts an ANSI->GIF converter which is best suited for long "scrolling", non-animated ANSI. Outworld Arts offers a Java ANSI viewer by Mephisto which is geared more towards ANSImations. There is also a new Windows viewer (finally) which supports both scrolling ANSI and ANSImation, even with modem simulation. And if you're command line inclined there is old reliable ACiD View 4.36-f. Mimic ASCII's ANSI to GIF converter http://mimic.ca/cgi-bin/m4/mview http://mimic.ca/cgi-bin/mview.cgi?url=http://www.acid.org/info/best/so-evend.ans http://mimic.ca/cgi-bin/mview.cgi?url=http://www.acid.org/info/best/ae-vudu.ans&thumb=y Outworld Arts "ANSI2HTML" Java viewer http://www.outworldarts.com/ansi2html/ansiview.html http://studenten.freepage.de/cgi-bin/feets/freepage_ext/41030x030A/rewrite/meph/ascii/other/ansi/app_dyn.htm Windows and DOS viewers http://www.thuglife.org/_thug/apps/index.shtml http://www.acid.org/ftp/avd-436f.zip (compatible w/ Windows XP DOS) "You're missing some stuff. Do you want it?" Yes. (!) If you used to run a BBS or were an avid collector of artpacks/emags and still have them backed up somewhere (tape, floppy, disk, old computer) by all means please send me a directory listing of your files or if you can send the media or a copy and I'll sort through it. Although the ACiD-specific archives have been well maintained and meticulously looked after, there are countless other releases by other groups missing from our FTP site. The archive is hovering around 3.5GB right now but I know of some pretty major releases missing between 1990-1994 that need to be recovered. It pains me that there is little to no evidence remaining right now of great groups from the early days, such as Nemesis and others. ...UNRELATED, MOSTLY I'll be attending the, ahem, security conference Defcon 11 (www.defcon.org) this August in Las Vegas. Mail me if you'll be there too. The first rounds on me... ...STATISTICS The all-time "ACiD Eternal" memberlist continues to grow, standing tall at 673 unique individuals. I've discovered and corrected 2 dupes (which can fall below the radar when an artist changes their alias) and have figured in all the members of the ACiDic modding since it's inception. This number will continue to grow as I figure in Remorse members not covered on the master memberlist included as part of our periodically released artpacks during 2001-2002 and eventually include all of our new comers in 2003. It's exciting and encouraging that I've managed to exceed my originally forecasted 5-10 people notified a week, adding 60 new members of ACiD family to the project this month. This is the last month of focused efforts to actively locate people so they have an opportunity to be involved in ACiD-100, and hopefully it will be equally as successful. Same as last time, please feel free to pass this email along to ACiD members you've kept in touch with and spread the word of this epic endeavor. Unique ACiD members (1990-2002): 673 (+18) Members notified of ACID-100: 284 (+60) Emails received in May, 2003: 1,914 (+151) ...CLOSING I've made a point of making myself fairly visible and as available as possible during this time. If you have any additional questions I can be reached by any of the addresses below, email being my preferred method. Thanks for reading once again...
